ARTWORK
BY RICHARD STOUT AT BEEVILLE ART MUSEUM
Alternate Realities Opens
January 16, 2010
HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 11, 2009)—An exhibition of painting and
sculpture by Richard Stout, one of the pioneers of early Modernism in the
Southwest, will be on view at the Beeville Art Museum from January 16, 2010
through the end of April 2010.
Entitled Alternate Realities, the
exhibition includes works from the
1950’s to the present.
Long
celebrated as one of the regional masters of Modernism, but also known
nationally and internationally for his technical mastery, creativity, and
craftsmanship, Richard Stout has been making art for over fifty years. Trained at the Art Academy of
Cincinnati and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he had his first
solo exhibition in 1958 and his most recent show last year.
“There
is no more sophisticated painter working in the Southwest. Richard Stout stands apart… he is an
artist of our time,” Edmund P. Pillsbury, Ph.D., fine arts scholar and past
director of the Kimbell Art Museum in Dallas, stated in a 2001 exhibition
catalogue essay.
In
addition to his artistic achievements, Richard Stout enjoyed a long and
distinguished teaching career. He served as a Fine Arts Professor at the
University of Houston for many years, nurturing and influencing younger
generations of artists.
“Art
in Houston and art in Texas is richer and more vivid due to the lifelong
contributions of Richard Stout,” stated William Reaves, independent curator,
author, and gallery owner in Houston.
Stout
has regularly exhibited his work in various regional shows in Texas, but also
across the United States, and venues in Europe and Asia. His work has been included in selected
museum collections, including The Dallas Museum of Art; The Museum of Fine
Arts, Houston; The Menil Collection, Houston, Texas; the McNay Museum, San
Antonio, Texas; the Huntington Gallery at the University of Texas, Austin; and
the Kupferstich-Kabinett Museum of Art in Dresden, Germany.
